Title A name given to the resource Cornish Pilot Gig Association Description An account of the resource The Cornish Pilot Gig Association Collection has been drawn together through the 'Pulling Together The Past' project. This project was delivered between June 2018 and November 2019 by the Cornish Pilot Gig Association CIO. It set out to bring together existing heritage relating to gig rowing and capture the memories and experiences of the gig rowing community through filmed interviews. The collection features film, audio and photographic items which have been shared by over 30 contributors. There are also over 50 newly created filmed interviews documenting the traditions of gig rowing and development of the sport. Identifier An unambiguous reference to the resource within a given context CPGA_OH_051 Title A name given to the resource Andrew Nancarrow, Bissoe, 2019 Description An account of the resource David George interviews boatbuilder Andrew Nancarrow at his workshop in Bissoe. Andrew explains that he has built nineteen and has been building them since 1995 but was carrying out repair work prior to that. However he was building other boats in the 1980s being self taught with help from Ralph Bird who suggested that he help him with carrying out repair work and then putting repair work his way when he was busy. His first Cornish Pilot Gig was ‘Circe’ which he built for Truro Club of which he was a member which he found a bit daunting. Traditionally Cornish elm was used in gig building but because of Dutch Elm Disease Andrew explains it is now very difficult to source and the CPGA has changed the rules to allow the use of different strains of elm but that it is sometimes very difficult to say exactly which variety is being supplied. He says that there are moves to plant disease resistant varieties of elm which he says is a good thing but it will be many generations down the line who will reap the rewards.
