Andrew Nancarrow, Bissoe, 2019
Description
An account of the resource
David George interviews boatbuilder Andrew Nancarrow at his workshop in Bissoe. Andrew explains that he has built nineteen and has been building them since 1995 but was carrying out repair work prior to that. However he was building other boats in the 1980s being self taught with help from Ralph Bird who suggested that he help him with carrying out repair work and then putting repair work his way when he was busy. His first Cornish Pilot Gig was ‘Circe’ which he built for Truro Club of which he was a member which he found a bit daunting. Traditionally Cornish elm was used in gig building but because of Dutch Elm Disease Andrew explains it is now very difficult to source and the CPGA has changed the rules to allow the use of different strains of elm but that it is sometimes very difficult to say exactly which variety is being supplied. He says that there are moves to plant disease resistant varieties of elm which he says is a good thing but it will be many generations down the line who will reap the rewards.
