Cornish Pilot Gig ‘William Peters’ built in 1987 by Ralph Bird of Devoran and named after the renowned Cornish Pilot Gig builder William Peters of St Mawes launched by a descendant, Frank Peters. Also in the picture are Cornish Pilot Gigs 'Newquay' built in 1812 and 'Sussex' built in 1886 both by the Peters family.

Cornish Pilot Gigs 'Newquay' and 'Dove' racing off the coast of Newquay. The crew of 'Newquay' are - bow Mike Stern, Gordon Ellery, John Martin, Dan Todman, Angus Martin, Dennis Craddock and Cox Graham Henwood. The crew of 'Dove' are – bow John Kennedy, Des Bicknell, Donald Morris, Ron Pearce, Stan Pearce, Les Carne and Ewart Kennedy. 'Newquay' won the race by four lengths. A comment from one of the members - 'The 'Dove' crew had pinched the only set of matching oars and the two Martins had to make do with two white Lifeboat oars'. Both were built by the Peters family of St Mawes around 1812 and 1820 respectively, ‘Newquay’ being the oldest known Cornish Pilot Gig.
