Mac is a Cornishman who is imbued with ceaseless enthusiasm and energy for all things Cornish and the preservation of Cornish heritage. Born in St Blazey Gate, as a young boy he remembers helping the Endeen and Matthews families seine fishing in St Austell Bay. He joined the Merchant Navy and by the time he was 21 he had sailed around the world! He later worked for English China Clay at Parkandillick for 34 years. Mac has been gathering his collection for over 30 years. It features Cornish village and town scenes, churches, landmarks and the Isles of Scilly. It also illustrates aspects of social history and Cornish industry, including shipping, shipwrecks, and lifeboats. Some of the images are extremely rare. Of particular interest are the photographs of the same place, taken from the same angle, through the ages. Mac speaks regularly to Cornish community gatherings using his postcards and images as a talking point. His collection is a unique record of Cornwall’s social history through the last 150 years. It has a large and important collection of photographs and film documenting over 130 years of the china clay industry in mid-Cornwall. The collection shows the evolution of china clay extraction over the twentieth century, with images of horses, water-wheels, beam engines, and locomotives. More recent photographs show how mechanised extraction has altered the landscape of the area. Community life in the ‘Clay Country’ is also shown through images of the Bugle Band Contest, pantomimes, pensioners’ dinners, sports events and the impact of the World Wars. The Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum occupies a 26 acre site which includes the Victorian remains of two former china clay works, just two miles from St. Austell in the heart of the Clay Country.  The site incorporates a visitor attraction, Accredited Museum, Scheduled Ancient Monument, woodland walks and spectacular views into the Wheal Martyn clay pit, which still operates today. Wheal Martyn is open daily from 29th March to 30th October between 10am and 5pm and from 31st October to 23rd December between 10am – 4pm. Title A name given to the resource Paul Yockney Collection Description An account of the resource The Yockney Collection is a superb record of Cornish life in the 1980's as captured by press photographer Paul Yockney. Paul began his photographic career in the Royal Navy, taking photographs of vessels and aircraft from his base at RNAS Culdrose. He went on to become a prolific press photographer contributing weekly to local newspapers. The Collection comprises of the photographs he took for press use from the late 1970s until the late 1980s. The images were predominantly taken in the Helston and Lizard area but extend to other areas including Falmouth, Truro, Camborne and Redruth. Competitors proudly displaying their prizewinning livestock, elaborate carnival floats and daring boxing day swimmers reveal a Cornwall, rich in community activity. Paul demonstrates his own wicked sense of humour capturing quirky events, otherwise forgotten, such as a dog spontaneously joining in football match in Porthleven and 'Teasy' the runaway bull, rampaging through the streets after escaping from the Helston Fatstock Show. Paul also covered the more serious events of the period and the emergency services are featured carrying out cliff-top rescues, putting out fires and risking their lives in rough seas. Paul made careful notes about each of his photos at the time they were taken and these are an invaluable addition to the collection. The Yockney Collection is a window on a decade well within living memory, providing an honest and entertaining record of the 1980's.
